Samsung Wave 578 next NFC enabled Quick Tap handset


The 3.2-inch Bada-powered Samsung Wave 578 has been unveiled as the next HFC enabled Quick Tap compatible handset set to allow users to make contactless payments across the UK

Orange and Barclaycard have announced they are to expand their offering of NFC contactless payment capable handsets in the UK with the Samsung Wave 578 unveiled as the next Quick Tap compatible device.

The second Quick Tap contactless payment handset to hit the market following on from the Samsung Tocco Quick Tap, the Samsung Wave 578 will allow Barclaycard, Barclays debit and Orange Credit Card holders to make purchases of £15 or under at more than 50,000 compatible outlets across the UK.

Playing host to a 3.2-inch WQVGA touchscreen display the Samsung Wave 578 is to run Samsung’s bespoke operating system Bada and come equipped with the full array of Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS and 3G connectivity options.

A 3.2-megapixel rear-mounted camera with video recording capabilities lands alongside integrated social networking offerings from Facebook and Twitter to handle the device’s entertainment credentials.

“Paying with a mobile phone means never being without the right change, and always having access to funds. That’s why I believe contactless mobile is the future of payments,” said David Chan, CEO of Barclaycard Consumer Europe.

“At the launch of our first contactless handset earlier this year we promised we would roll out greater choice in the ‘Quick Tap’ range and I’m pleased to be able to announce the first of these new handsets today.”


Samsung Wave 578 Quick Tap release date and price

Compatible with a host of national retailers including selected McDonalds, EAT, Subway and Wilkinson stores, the Samsung Wave with Quick Tap is to be made available through Orange in the UK “in the coming weeks” on a selection of currently unannounced monthly plans as well as on a PAYG basis.
